Across town, REED EVANS thrives as a bespoke jewelry designer, specializing in unique, custom pieces. While Reed has an unparalleled talent at jewelry creation, he’s cynical about love, believing that his patrons are often trying to use his products as a manufactured way into a woman’s heart. His perspective is worsened when his long-term girlfriend rebuffs his marriage proposal, along with the ring he spent months designing, breaking his heart and cementing his belief that true love simply doesn’t exist.
Meanwhile. Lily starts her venture, labeling herself the Romance Whisperer. She caters to well- intentioned men who have their hearts in the right place, but their minds in the wrong catalogue. Lily’s method is to interview her client about the beloved woman in his life, and generate the ideal gift, experience or communication. The business explodes and Lily can barely keep up with the demand. Satisfied customers return for her signature expertise, with their partners none the wiser about the supplementary efforts taken to build the perfect gesture. As the business grows, Lily frequents Reed’s shop, along with her happy clients. Reed finally inquires about the nature of her business and is appalled. In his opinion, it’s further proof that true love is phony. Lily steadfastly counters that the love and intentions are genuine. Her clients simply need some extra help to get things just right. She’s essentially acting as their gift guru. Lily and Reed both independently and reluctantly agree to a blind date, only to discover that they have been matched with each other. The contentious conversation about her work continues and the two do nothing but clash.
One day, Lily comes to Reed’s store with his brother-in-law STEVE, and it takes all his effort not to report the information back to his sister, PAMELA. But he doesn’t want to hurt her feelings, as she’s delighted by Steve’s special efforts and attention. When a disgruntled client bursts into Lily’s office to demand a refund, she learns that he didn’t follow her advice and this was a relationship so irreparable no gesture could patch things up. She attempts to explain that she can’t heal a broken couple. She can only help execute a true and pure-hearted intention from her clients. But the disgruntled client won’t listen to reason.
Lily and Reed continue to intersect with each other, at his shop and across town, their banter continuing to escalate. It’s clear to everyone but themselves that they have an obvious flirtation. When Lily is finally about to admit the truth about her feelings about Reed to herself and to him, an article is published all about her business. To her despair, her client list is leaked, thus exposing, and destroying, all her good work. She can think of only one culprit who would have released the information: Reed.
