After landing her dream promotion as CEO at the hippest ad agency in New York City, and being proposed to on the same night, SUZIE can’t understand why she’s not happy. Even though she’s got it all—the perfect fiancé, lucrative job, big home, luxury car and a shoe collection that would make Jimmy Choo jealous—she feels like she’s getting farther away from her true passion: being an artist. One cold night, her fancy shoes slip on ice, and she falls—only to be saved by clutching a bus stop billboard that reads, “Find Your Happy Place. The Florida Keys.” Telling her fiancé and boss that she needs time to think, she packs only the essentials—sunglasses, flip flops, bathing suit, suntan lotion, art supplies and a book on minimalism called “Embrace the Now”—and drives until she arrives at The Coquina Resort, a tropical paradise in the Keys. She laughs at the sand “snowman” and the Christmas lights on palm trees.
Later, ZANE, the resort’s handsome minimalist boat captain, who dreams of starting an eco-tour company in the Keys, accidentally snags Suzie’s sunhat while fishing. He apologizes and offers her a free boat trip, but Suzie refuses—only to change her mind when her eyes fall on the Embrace the Now book. Over the next week, Zane leads Suzie on various Keys-style adventures, from snorkeling, island hopping, mangrove kayaking, tiki bars—and especially all the eccentric Florida Keys Christmas festivals and holiday must-dos. All this sun and fun inspires Suzie to start painting at a feverish rate. But when Suzie’s boss and fiancé hatch a plan to woo Suzie back to the city and fly down and start showering her with material possessions, Suzie almost gives in. However, when Zane surprises her with the great news that a small gallery in Miami wants to show her work, she recommits to her new artistic life.
On the boat trip with Zane to Miami, a fierce cold-front storm maroons them on a deserted island. All of Suzie’s paintings are destroyed in the storm. Having seemingly lost everything, she keeps warm in Zane’s arms as they sit by the campfire and watch real snow fall in the Keys for the first time in history. When Suzie and Zane finally make it back to the resort, her boss and fiancé give her a final ultimatum. Suzie must choose, once and for all, which way she’ll set her sails.
